Some details about you.

For me, it’s Tiger Woods’ "How I Play Golf" book. That book taught me so much and that’s why I am at the top of my game. Just my opinion, but it’s a great book with a lot of details for every type of shot possible and it teaches you a lot.
I go to the library and check out books on golf instruction all the time , I whiz through them cause if you try every tip you get "information paralyzation". Grap a few tips from each and be on your merry way. Plus if you absolutely hate the advice in one it cost you nothing . I didn’t care that much for Michelson’s "secret of the short game" It was more focused on how good he is and not detailed enough to really help a bunch , just my opinion. The photos were fantastic if you like seeing phil over and over again.
I ask myself that same question when I’m out on the range with my bf. It all depends on what aspect of your game you are trying to improve. If you don’t know specifically then a beginner golf lesson may be ideal. If you want to work on your swing or your golf grip the book I recommend is called "The Simple Swing". Think of it as golfing for dummies. It was very insightful and if it can help a girl like me lower my handicap then I’m sure it may be some help to you.
There’s two I highly recommend to everybody who asks me. I own both and have read both cover to cover several times. One is a classic. It’s Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. Hogan is considered to be arguably the best ball striker (accuracy and consistency with the irons) of all-time. It was written quite a while ago (1957 to be exact), but its fundamentals are still utterly and completely relevant to today’s game. The five lessons are: 1) The Grip 2) Stance and Posture 3) The First Part of the Swing (The Take-away) 4) The Second Part of the Swing (The Downswing) 5) Summary and Review.
The second I recommend is a bit more modern. It’s called Tiger Woods: How I Play Golf. Tiger Woods is considered to be arguably the best player of all-time and has engrossed almost a billion dollars over his professional career (which started in late 1996). Written in 2001, it is a longer book split into more parts than Hogan’s Five Lessons. The sections are as follows: Prologue) How to Start (Learning) 1) How to Putt (Putting) 2) How to Get it Down (Chipping and Short Game) 3) How to Escape from Sand (Bunker Play) 4) How to Swing (The Swing) 5) How to Flag Your Irons (Ball Striking and Iron Play) 6) How to Nail Fairway Woods (Fairway Woods) 7) How to Smoke the Driver (Driver and Tee Shots)
How to Handle Problems (Facing Adversity on the Golf Course) 9) How to Stay in Control (Course Management) 10) How to Master the Mind (Mental Game) 11) How to Get Strong (Fitness in Golf) 12) How to Play (Enjoying Yourself on the Golf Course)
The latter book literally taught me how to play golf from a very young age (six), which I received the date of it’s release and Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons I received on my tenth birthday. Both books have several pictures (color photographs in Tiger’s book, etched diagrams in Hogan’s book) in each section and shows you through the pictures what everything is supposed to look like in the golf swing. Both are phenomenal books in their own right and can be found for a relatively cheap price now be it on Amazon or eBay or wherever. And both are highly recommended by PGA pros (instructors and Tour players alike) across the globe.
I hope this helps and good luck getting better!
Love this one too…

Not as mechanical as the others, but still a great book. Very fundamental.
If instruction books were the answer then the average golfers scores would improve over the last 50 years, which they haven’t. Spend the money on lessons, so a live person can give you pointers relative to you and your swing. Good luck.
"How I Play Golf" by Tiger Woods aka the golf bible to me.
